HUNTSVILLE — County Commission’s Finance and Budget committees have voted to ask the full commission to curtail all spending by county departments except for emergencies for the remainder of the fiscal year.

That came in a special joint meeting of the two committees at the Scott County Office Building here Monday evening.

As a result, a resolution will be presented to the commission at its upcoming April 15 monthly meeting and, if adopted, will result in letters being sent to all department heads declaring the budget freeze.

Due in large measure to budget overruns related to the efforts made to re-start the Scott County Hospital, the county’s budget is nearing a crisis situation, according to Finance Director Brian Strunk.

“This has been a very, very challenging budget year,” Strunk stated, as the joint meeting got underway. He later added: “All told, we’re looking at the potential of wiping out our fund balance this year.”
