Oneida Lady Indians coach Marv West was named the District 4-A basketball coach of the year by a vote of his colleagues at a district coaches meeting Wednesday morning.

In his first year back on the bench, West's Lady Indian squad is 20-5 overall and 9-2 in district play heading into the final regular season game. Friday's visit from Oliver Springs will be for the regular season District 4-A championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's District 4-A tournament.

Additionally, six players from Oneida were named to the all-district team.

Oneida junior Cole West was named to the all-district first team, while seniors Clay Jeffers and Noah Duncan were named to the all-district second team.

On the ladies' all-district team, junior Micah Stephens and sophomore Jessica Morgan received recognition, while freshman Baylee Newport received honorable mention.

Coalfield's Samantha Hamby, who scored 31 points against Oneida in a losing effort Monday, was named the District 4-A girls' player of the year.

Wartburg senior Alex Fountain was named the boys' player of the year, while Wartburg coach Joe Layne received coach of the year honors.

Other news emerging from District 4's coaches' meeting was two successful coin tosses by Oneida, which will be used in the event of a tie in the final standings.

The successful tosses mean that Oneida's Lady Indians could capture the top seed in District 4-A with a win over Oliver Springs on Friday, while the Indians could grab the No. 2 spot with a win over the Bobcats.

A win over the Lady Bobcats would give the Lady Indians an outright claim to the No. 1 seed in District 4, while the Indians need Sunbright to lose to Jellico on Thursday in order to claim the No. 2 spot in the men's standings.

Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at OHS Gymnasium Friday.
